Shedding A Little Light On Visual Communication Strategies: Visual communication systems can help children and adults who are experiencing difficulties to understand what is happening during their day, understand their daily routines and to be able to express their needs more effectively. Visual communication environments can include: Objects of reference, recordable charts, symbol key rings, choice boards, first then boards, now next boards and visual timetables. Visual Timetables: Visual timetables enable the user (adult or child) to be able to easily see and track what is going to happen during in a part of or all of the day. Some people do not cope very well with change so we use the visual timetable to help prepare for the day and adjust to what is happening in good time. It's a fabulous tool as there are no sudden suprises that may otherwise be hard to deal with. First Next Later Boards or First Then Boards: There board resources are used when a child or adult can become easily overwhelmed. The Fist Next Later board allows the splitting up of the daily routine tasks. It allows you to be able to place a motivator after a task which may be found difficult. With the use of the Now Next strategy children and adults are often able to progress to a more detailed visual timetable. Choice Boards: Just as the name suggests, a choice board will give an adult or child the opportunity to make a choice. All of our resources are designed to be needs specific so we suggest that you use then in the best way that supports your needs. Sometimes an adult or child can only cope with making a choice from two things to start with. It may then be possible to more to four or maybe six things to choose from.....everyone is unique. Symbol Card Key Rings: Symbol card key rings are great. They allow you to be able to store an carry the symbols that you need in topics....a kind of filing system if you like. With the addition of a (hook) velcro dot on the back of your cards they can easily be used with all of your symbol resources. You can see symbol key rings being worn by care support workers, teaching assistants, parent, care home workers, hospital staff etc so that they are on hand to support communication. Visual communication systems are used by people of all ages with a wide variety of needs. These needs include but are not limited to Learning Disability, Down Syndrome, Autistic Spectrum Conditions, Stroke or Brain Injury, Dementia, Language impairment, Multi sensory impairment and Mental Health Conditions where managing stress is a high priority. Everyone should be given the opportunity to thrive. We design and make resources that people can enjoy using. We want people to feel confident with their communication strategy and be able to use the resources that best meet there needs wherever they are. Learning success comes from repetition. If children are using a star reward system at school it would be fabulous for them to be able to use the same system at home. If early intervention is truly early and starts at play group or nursery a child would be so much more well prepared for the transition to be school. We think big and dream bigger.
